Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach is shaking his head after hearing Amir Khan (31-4, 19KOs) call for a fall showdown with former four division world champion Miguel Cotto of Puerto Rico.
Roach, who used to train Khan until Virgil Hunter took over in 2012, has been training Cotto for the last few years.
Khan moved up by eight pounds to a catch-weight of 155 last Saturday night, and was knocked out in brutal fashion by WBC middleweight champion Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez in six rounds. The fight headlined the first boxing event at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Roach wants Khan to stay away from a fight with Cotto and instead take some time off after suffering a bad knockout. Khan is going to face a medical suspension of at least three months, but he wants to return to the ring on a date in December and named Cotto as one of the main targets on his list. He wants to bring Cotto to the UK for a major event in a stadium.
"I'm not sure [if that fight can get made]. Coming off a knockout loss, it's a lot of balls [to call for Cotto]. He was knocked out badly. I think he should take some time off right now," Roach told BoxingScene.com.
"Anything Amir Khan calls out or says, I don't really care - because he is going to be suspended for 90 days or more. That was a very, very severe knockout. He went right to the hospital afterwards. They say he was okay afterwards. He was at the nightclub afterwards, so that was a good sign. I hope his health is well, but he's not ready for any fight for a while."
