Freddie Roach, trainer for WBC lightweight champ Manny Pacquiao, told The Manila Bulletin that he will attempt to convince his fighter to reconsider the 70-30 offer presented by Oscar De La Hoya for a fight on December 6 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Pacquiao walked away from the fight after De La Hoya refused to budge from a 70-30 revenue split and balked at Pacquiao 60-40 counter-offer.
De La Hoya is now trying to secure Sergio Mora for the December date, while Pacquiao will go ahead with Humberto Soto for November. But, Mora would still have to win a very tough fight with Vernon Forrest in September, and Soto is not the fight that Roach wants Pacquiao to take.
"Fighting Humberto Soto is ridiculous," Roach.
Richaed Schaefer, CEO for Golden Boy Promotions, said the 70-30 split would have earned Pacquiao between $10-15 million, by far the largest payday for the Filipino fighter. The fight would have taken place at 147-pounds with 8-ounce gloves being used.
