Hall of fame trainer Freddie Roach, speaking with Gareth Davies of Telegraph Sport, mentioned that he no longer has a stable where one fighter can beat Floyd Mayweather Jr. Now he has a stable with two fighters who are capable of beating Mayweather. In the past, Roach labeled Manny Pacquiao as the "only fighter who can beat Mayweather." Pacquiao has some company. Roach is confident that his other star pupil, WBA 140-pound champion Amir Khan, has the goods to beat Floyd Jr.
Roach would like Khan to get at least four more fights under his belt before a fight with Mayweather. Khan is interested in facing Mayweather in London in 2012, on the eve of the Olympics.
“Amir can still get so much better. That’s why I’m now saying I believe I have two fighters who can beat Floyd Mayweather Jnr. Manny Pacquiao and Amir Khan. Amir has the perfect style to beat Floyd, because he has speed, and Floyd has trouble dealing with it. Speed can’t be taught, or duplicated, and it’s so hard to deal with. It’s the greatest weapon a fighter can have. Amir just needs a little more work [before facing Mayweather].” Coupled, that is, with perhaps four victories at this level," Roach said.
