Hall of Fame coach Freddie Roach is not convinced that Gennady "GGG" Golovkin intentionally allowed Willie Monroe Jr. to get off with punches when they collided a few weeks ago.
Golovkin was able to stop Monore in six rounds, but not before he ate several hard combinations during the match. After the fight was over, Golovkin and his trainer Abel Sanchez stated that he intentionally let his guard down to extend the fight for a few more rounds, and to make it more exciting for the fans who paid tickets at The Forum in Los Angeles.
Golovkin is the mandatory challenger to the WBC middleweight crown, which is held by Roach's fighter Miguel Cotto. The Puerto Rican star returns tomorrow night at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York against Daniel Geale.
Roach admits Golovkin is dangerous in the early going, but he's not convinced Golovkin is a more dangerous fighter than Saul "Canelo" Alvarez in the later rounds.
"He's a good fighter. A good puncher and a possible opponent down the line. Ill do everything in power to get my guy ready to fight him and beat him," Roach told Fight Hub. "Golovkin is a older and a better puncher early [than Canelo], but in the late rounds [in the Monroe fight] he didn't look so great. They said they took the punches on purpose just to let the fans enjoy it and so forth - that's bullsh*t. And if they let us punch him, we'll knock him out. "
