There were rumors that WBC junior welterweight champion Viktor Postol (28-0, 12KOs) was actively looking for a new trainer, mainly John David Jackson - but Hall of fame coach Fredie Roach says Postol is still with him and he is waiting to get word of a return date for his fighter.
“We don’t have a date yet,” Roach told BoxingScene.com. “Once we got that confirmation, we’ll start working. We still don’t know any names.”
Postol has been out of the ring since capturing the vacant WBC junior welterweight title with an upset knockout victory over Lucas Matthysse last October at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.
There was a mandatory defense in play against Amir Iman, but that is no longer in the running after Imam was upset last November by Adrian Granados.
One fight that Postol would have liked is a unification with WBO champion Terence Crawford.
That fight was being discussed for February 27th in New York City. Crawford claims he was fully on board for the fight, but Postol turned the opportunity down - so instead Crawford was forced to select tough veteran Hank Lundy for the HBO televised showcase.
Roach is disputing Crawford's version of the facts, stating that his boxer would never rejected that type of opportunity. In past interviews, Roach expressed his confidence that Postol's complicated style was a serious threat to knock off Crawford.
“That’s a lie from what I know, because we would not turn that fight down," Roach said.
