Promoter Peter Rivera of Puerto Rico Best Boxing would like to revive the idea of a fight between former champion Juan Manuel Lopez (31-2, 28KOs) and Yuriorkis Gamboa (22-0, 16KOs). Top Rank had been building the fight for a long time, but those plans fell apart after Lopez was knocked out, twice, by Orlando Salido.
Rivera says Gamboa is interested in having his training camp in Puerto Rico and may even stage his next fight on the island. Rivera hopes to get the hype restarted on a Juanma-Gamboa fight.
"The singer 50 Cent bought Gamboa's contract from Top Rank and he is interested in choosing Puerto Rico as the location for their training and may even make his next fight on the island. Puerto Rico has a solid base of Cubans who love and know boxing and Gamboa would be the perfect figure," Rivera told Carlos Gonzalez.
"We hope that we can revive the idea of Lopez and Gamboa face each other in the future. Juanma could stay at 130 pounds and it's an idea that pleases HBO."
