The promoter of Guillermo Rigondeaux (15-0, 10KOs), Boris Arencibia of Caribe Promotions, dreams of one day staging a major event in Cuba where his boxer would be involved in the headline fight. Rigondeaux retained his WBA/WBO super bantamweight world titles on December 31 in Japan, when he got off the canvass to secure an eleventh round stoppage victory over Hisashi Amagasa (28-5-2, 19 KOs).
"He certainly has a deep story. We dream about doing a future fight with Rigo in Cuba, where he would be welcomed as a hero. Caribe dreams of organizing a major event in front of 100,000 people in the stadium of Havana and Rigo as the headline figure. Can you imagine a Rigo victory in front of his own people?,'' Arencibia said to George Ebro.
Rigondeaux fighting in Cuba will probably never happen. In 2007, Rigondeaux failed to appear for his scheduled bout at the Pan American Games in Brazil and defected from Cuba. After being arrested in Brazil and then wanting to go back home, he defected against in February 2009 via Mexico City to Miami.
