Frank Warren's office has confirmed to BoxingScene.com that the promoter has mad a deal for a March 12th fight between Cuban sensation Guillermo Rigondeaux (16-0, 10 early) and Liverpool’s James "Jazza" Dickens (21-1, 6 KOs) at Liverpool's Echo Arena and expects to make an announcement soon.
News swept across Twitter about the fight earlier today when Warren mentioned it during an interview with iFilm London. With an announcement imminent, British boxing fans can look forward to welcoming one of the sport's finest boxers to our shores. It is also an amazing opportunity for the 24-year-old British Super bantamweight titlist.
The chirpy Scouser is a local hero with his down to earth, jack-the-lad, character, but has a steely determination to upset the odds on the biggest night of his life.
“It is like a Rocky story, one day I’m just training waiting for my next fight and then I get call, do I want to fight Guillermo Rigondeaux? Are you mad, one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world wants to fight me? Not half, I’ll definitely have some of that!” Said Dickens.
“Opportunities like this don’t come around every day so I’ve grabbed it with both hands. It’s been my childhood dream to be the best in the world and this to me is a golden opportunity to become the best by beating Rigondeaux,”
“He might not have the belts, but he’s still the world champion in my eyes, Frampton and Quigg both didn’t want to know him, but what they see as a threat, I see as an opportunity. We’ve all got weaknesses and Rigondeaux will have his, it’s my job to go out an exploit them and beat him.”
Belts aside, Rigondeaux, 35, is widely recognised as the division's number one fighter, but his boxing style makes for unexciting fights and he lacks wider appeal—his last fight was a 10 rounder against Drian Francisco for the vacant WBC International Silver belt.
However, his mooted appearance in the U.K. has already generated a buzz amongst British fans and brings added value to an already strong bill that is topped by Manchester’s Terry Flanagan's WBO lightweight title defence against Liverpool's Derry Mathews.
