Junior featherweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux will defend his world titles on July 19 against undefeated prospect Jonathan Guzman, according to tweets on Sunday morning from Rigondeaux’s manager, Gary Hyde.
The bout in the Chinese gambling mecca of Macau will be part of a card also featuring flyweights Brian Viloria and Zou Shiming in separate bouts.
This will be Rigondeaux’s first fight of 2014, coming more than seven months after a snoozer of a win over Joseph Agebko on HBO, a bout in which Agbeko did little to engage, throwing just 29 punches per round and landing an average of four per round.
This will also be Rigondeaux’s last fight under his current contract with Top Rank, according to Hyde.
Rigondeaux, a 33-year-old two-time Olympic gold medalist originally from Cuba, is 13-0 with 8 knockouts as a pro. He is the RING champion and the World Boxing Association and World Boxing Organization titleholder at 122 pounds, with his biggest win coming in a decision over Nonito Donaire in April 2013.
Guzman, a 24-year-old from the Dominican Republic, is 16-0 with knockouts in all of his wins, plus 1 no contest. His recent wins, according to BoxRec, were a first-round knockout of an opponent with a record of 2-29 and a third-round stoppage over a foe whose record was 0-4-1. Only three of Guzman’s wins have come against opponents listed as having winning records: second-round stoppages over guys listed at 6-4 and 12-8, and a sixth-round win over a foe listed at 10-3-1.
Half of his 16 wins have come against fighters who have never won a pro bout beforehand. One of his wins came against a guy with just one victory on his record going into the fight. Three came against men who had but two wins on their record. That means that 12 of his 16 wins, or 75 percent, came against opponents with zero, one or two wins on their record.
