Manchester icon Ricky Hatton has responded to the recent challenge that was made by Joan Guzman. The former two-division champion is heading to the junior welterweight division and Hatton is one of the names on his radar. Hatton doesn't seem to be too interested in the fight. He advised Guzman to worry more about losing weight. Guzman was nine-pounds over the weight lightweight limit for his rematch against Ali Funeka.
"I read with interest that he now wants to fight me, but before he worries about who he is fighting next he needs to concentrate on his training. I am criticized about the amount of weight I put on between fights, but in 47 contests I have never once come in overweight," Hatton said to the Manchester Evening News.
Guzman was being handled by Hatton's former trainer Lee Beard, and Hatton's often used nutritionist Kerry Kayes. Hatton knew there was a problem when Kayes was brought in to the mix.
"Guzman is trained by Lee Beard, who assisted me for a couple of fights, and there must have been a problem because my friend, and world renowned nutritionist, Kerry Kayes was brought in to assist them. Despite Kerry's experience he obviously didn't have enough time to help Guzman shift the weight," Hatton said.
"Guzman is a two-weight world champion and someone of that experience should not come in so overweight. It was extremely unprofessional and if any of my fighters did that I'd be on them like a ton of bricks."
