RICKY HATTON believes Denton Vassell is following him all the way to world title glory.

The undefeated Mancunian takes a big step towards emulating ‘The Hitman’ on Hatton Promotions bumper show at Wigan’s Robin Park Arena on Friday 16th April.

That’s when Vassell challenges Colchester’s Lee Purdy for the vacant Commonwealth welterweight crown in a fight that promises to be a classic.

Neither fighter takes a backward step and two-weight world champion Hatton said: “Denton is my type of fighter with a style that fans will love, but he knows Lee will be there ready to meet him head on.”

Vassell, 25, who is based at Hatton Health and Fitness and trained by Bob Shannon has impressed in his three fights under the Hatton Promotions banner.

He sharpened up for his 12 rounder against Purdy by forcing Kevin McCauley to retire after two rounds last month.

Hatton added: “Denton is really coming on well and a lot of credit must go to the work Bob Shannon has done with him.

“He trains so hard and Bob is bringing out the best of him.

“I honestly believe that one day Denton is going to become a name in his right and will be fighting in Las Vegas against the world’s best.”

Purdy, 22, is the current Southern Area welterweight champion, with his only loss in 16 fights suffered against Peter McDonagh.

A second Commonwealth title fight on the bill being televised live by Sky Sports sees Mancunian Thomas McDonagh square off against Londoner Gary Woolcombe with the vacant light-middleweight title at stake.

The rest of the talent packed undercard features includes Craig Lyon, Richard Towers, and world class super-featherweight Sergey Gulyakevich.
