International 'Matchmaker' Ricardo Rizzo, told BoxingScene.com that Cuban Richard Abril should be declared the "regular" world champion of the lightweight class. Brandon Rios lost the WBA title for being unable to make the lightweight for his recent fight with John Murray. In opinion of Rizzo, the sanctioning bodies usually follow their rules in these cases, in which the title becomes vacant and the interim champion is usually bumped to full title status.
“I am almost 90% sure, but I can't say that it's a fact. Obviously, it’s difficult to say that it's 100%, but in this type of case I believe that the WBA will end up declaring Abril as regular world champion of the division," Rizzo said.
Richard Abril is part of “Dream Team Boxing Promotions,” run by the young Cuban promoter Carlos Rodriguez and based in South Florida. Richard Abril will be the first world champion of the company that began less than one year ago.
