Kendall Holt won't be getting his rematch any time soon, and prospect Victor Ortiz is going to have to wait a little longer. According to Dan Rafael, WBO junior welterweight champ Ricardo Torres (32-1, 28 KOs) will defend his title against Mike Alvarado (19-0, 13 KOs). Alvarado fought four times in 2007, winning three by knockout and one by majority decision.
Alvarado, co-managed by Shelly Finkel, and promoted by Top Rank, has accepted the fight for the Feb. 16 undercard to Kelly Pavlik-Jermain Taylor in Las Vegas. Holt, following his controversial September stoppage to Torres in Colombia, has pulled out all the stops to petition for a rematch.
Ortiz (25-1-1, 15KOs), at only 20-years-old, has more than enough time to land a title shot.
Ortiz’s manager, Cameron Dunkin, told BoxingScene's Rick Reeno last week, "Ortiz is only 20-years-old. There is no rush. He's got more than enough time for a title shot." Ortiz is currently ranked at number 8, pursuant to the rankings released earlier today by the WBO. Holt is currently ranked at number 2.
