Flyweight Ricardo "El Matematico" Nunez (20-2, 17KOs) is hoping to be selected as the first defense for the new WBA flyweight champion Hernan "Tyson" Marquez (30-2, 23KOs). Marquez will return on July 2 at Centro de Usos Multiples in Sonora, Mexico. He captured the title on April 2 by traveling to the Arena Roberto Duran in Panama and stopping hometown hero Luis Concepcion in the eleventh round. Nunez fought on the undercard, for the WBA Latino flyweight crown, and stopped Luis Singo in five. Nunez is ranked in the number two spot of the top ten, with Juan Carlos Reveco sitting at number one.
