Boxing fans almost had a heart attack when they heard that Ricardo Mayorga might be dropped from the upcoming superfight with Felix Trinidad when he was arrested on the charge of rape in his country. Mayorga has cleared up his legal issures for the moment and is more then ready for his scheduled October 2nd bout with Trinidad, which takes place in Madison Square Garden. BoxingScene caught up with Mayorga to see if the latest legal troubles have hurt his preparation for the fight.
BoxingScene: Have the recent legal problems in your country hurt your training in anway?
Mayorga: No, my training was not hurt by any of this. I am ready for this fight. I will knock Trinidad out and there is no escape for him.
BoxingScene: Were you worried that the fight might get cancelled or his camp might get a new opponent? Trinidad's father made it seem like you were not going to be their opponent.
Mayorga: I was never worried, most of the stuff going around in the papers was not true. Trinidad's father knows that I will knock his son out, he was hoping that I wouldnt be able to fight but now his worst nightmare has come true. This will be the quickest comeback in the sport.
BoxingScene: The fans were real worried, the public was in a frenzy when they heard that you might be out of the fight.
Mayorga: The fans want to see a real fight, they dont want to see Trinidad fight some bum from the street. They want to see a knock out and I wll give them the knock out. If I was unable to leave (the country) I would of asked Don King to hold the fight in my (jail) cell, this fight was going to happen regardless of the circumstances.
BoxingScene: Good luck Ricardo, its great to know that the fight will go on as planned..
