The main event on Boxeo Telemundo, live from the Miccosukee Resort and Gaming in Miami, Florida, showcased welterweight action for the WBA FEDECENTRO belt.  Hometown fans would be in for a treat, watching Gilberto Reyes (16-2-1, 10 KOs) successfully defend his belt against Michael Santos (11-4-0, 7 KOs) from Canoga Park, California.

In the twelve-round title bout, Reyes, 147 lbs, was too much for Santos,

146 lbs, to handle.  The early rounds showed the precise punching of Reyes outnumbered and outworked the challenger.  Santos would work hard as the aggressor; however, the counter rights and lefts of Reyes would dictate the action.  A powerful right uppercut would land flush on Santos’ chin to stun him in the sixth.

The middle rounds would prove much of the same, until the ninth round.

Santos opened the ninth trying to work on Reyes’ body.  Reyes would counter with a solid punch to the face of his opponent, sending him on his heels in retreat.  Reyes would finish the night strong, countering at every opportunity.  Judges scored the bout a shutout, 120-107 (Mark Streisand) and 120-108 twice (Al Wilensky and Peter Trematerra).

In the co-main event of the night, Lenin “Volcano” Arroyo (13-3-1, 2 KOs) from Miami, met Ener Julio (25-8-3, 18 KOs) from Colombia in ten rounds of junior welterweight action.  Arroyo, 141 lbs, scored a shutout victory over Julio, 141 lbs.  All three judges, Mark Streisand, Alex Levin, and Peter Trematerra, scored the bout 99-88.  The point discrepancy is due to several point deductions.  The bout began very tentatively, with neither fight taking any chances.  Arroyo would begin to pick up the pace in the third round, landing several clean shots.  Julio first seemed hurt in the fourth and both boxers met for a face-to-face showdown after the bell.

The fifth began with a point deduction for Ener Julio after he threw a clear low blow.  He was not warned prior to this for low blows.  Referee Jorge Ortiz came into the picture again right at the opening of the sixth, when he warned both boxers for roughhouse tactics.  Julio would have a point deducted right after for another low blow.  Not to be outdone, Arroyo received a point deduction mid-round for a low blow of his own.

The final rounds of the bout showed much of the same, Arroyo was too much for Julio to handle and other than a few sporadic trading, Arroyo would control for the remainder.

Undercard action:

Andres Larrinaga (4-19-3, 2 KOs), 164 lbs, of Miami, defeated Cuban debut Carlos Aballe by unanimous decision.  Judges Alex Levin, Peter Trematerra, and Al Wilensky scored the bout 38-37.  Larrinaga knocked Aballe down in the third with a wild assortment of punches at the onset of the round.

Puerto Rican Javier Perez (1-1-0, 1 KO), 141 lbs, defeated Adam Ortiz (1-1-0, 0 KOs) of Tallahassee, 143.25 lbs, via TKO.  Referee Jorge Ortiz called a halt to the action at the 2:50 mark of round four.  Perez maintained control of the bout throughout, and in round four, Ortiz could not find the will to fight back.

Carlos Perez (7-3-0, 6 KOs), 121 lbs, also from Puerto Rico, faced Pensacola’s Kevin Hudgins (3-2-0, 1 KO), 120 lbs.  Hudgins landed a shocking blow to the Puerto Rican fan base, when he unloaded a flurry of punches along the ropes, forcing Perez’s corner to come up to the ring and call the fight.

Miami favorite Juan Arroyo (32-5-4, 16 KOs), 151.25 lbs, was upset somewhat by fellow Miamian Joseph Benjamin (1-11-2, 1 KO), 152.5 lbs.  The bout was judged a majority decision draw.  Arroyo, who has fought his whole career in South Florida, was heavily favored in this match and brought a strong contingent of Puerto Rican fans.  Judges Alex Levin and Mark Streisand scored 38-38, while Al Wilensky scored the fight 39-37 for Arroyo.

Nicaraguan David Obregon (9-1-0, 6 KOs), 150 lbs, defeated Jamaican Anthony Osbourne (4-10-1, 1 KO), 151 lbs.  Obregon won handily on the scorecards, 58-55 (Peter Trematerra), 59-54 (Al Wilensky), and 58-55 (Mark Streisand).  Obregon received a point deduction in the third for a low-blow.

In the last bout of the evening, and the most entertaining, Columbia, South Carolina’s James Hope (2-1-0, 2 KOs), 132.5 lbs, dominated Eliecer Zayas (5-1-0, 4 KOs), 132.5 lbs, of Santa Isabel, Puerto Rico.  Hope would destroy Zayas in the second, knocking him down with a hard right hand and again with an uppercut.  Zayas would survive the round, but immediately was caught again in the third by a right hand that dropped him.  Referee Jorge Alonso stopped the bout right afterward.

The card was presented by ‘Tuto’ Zabala with All Star Boxing, The New Generation.  The beautiful Miccosukee Resort and Gaming will play host again for boxing this coming August as All Star is returning with another night of action and excitement.
