Azat Hovhannisyan pulled off an upset victory on Friday night, winning an eight-round unanimous decision over the previously unbeaten Aidos Medet at Thunder Studios in Long Beach, California.

The scores for the junior featherweight bout were 77-75, 78-74, and 79-73 for Hovhannisyan.

Hovhannisyan, an Armenian from Glendale, California, took the fight on a week’s notice, but fought inspired. Hovhannisyan applied constant pressure to the 24-year-old Medot, whom he had previously sparred for this camp before Medot’s original opponent fell out.

Hovhannisyan, 37, never took a backward step, pressing the action against the slick southpaw Medet. Hovhannisyan's work rate and constant pressure overwhelmed Medet.

Hovhannisyan improves to 23-6 (17 KOs). After the fight, Hovhannisyan, a former junior featherweight title challenger, called for a title fight at featherweight. Medet of Alga, Kazakhstan, is now 13-1 (9 KOs)

Middleweight Frank Espinoza of Sacramento, California, knocked out Jose Adolfo Madrigal of Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, in the second round. The time of the stoppage was 2:09.

Espinoza dropped Madrigal with a short right hand in the second round. Espinoza would floor Madrigal with a left hook later in that round. The final knockdown saw Espinoza swarm Madrigal. Espinoza landed a series of unanswered punches, forcing the 30-year-old Madrigal to take a knee, as referee Gerard White called an end to the fight.

Espinoza, a 20-year-old trained by Ray Woods, is now 2-0 (2 KOs), while Madrigal, who took the bout on less than a week’s notice, falls to 8-10 (6 KOs)

Junior middleweight Art Barrera Jnr of Paramount, California, knocked out Charles Stanford of Cincinnati, Ohio, in the second round. The time of the stoppage was 2:58. Barrera capitalized on a fatigued 39-year-old Stanford at the end of the second round. Barrera trapped Stanford on the ropes and threw a combination of left and right hands, sending Stanford to the canvas face-first to be counted out by the referee.

Barrera, 20, is on a five-fight knockout streak and holds a record of 11-0 (8 KOs). Stanford falls to 8-7 (4 KOs).

Junior welterweight Leonardo Rubalcava of Jurupa Valley, California, knocked out Joseph Rivas of Casa Grande, Arizona, in the fifth round. The time of the stoppage was 1:25.

In the second round, Rubalcava, 23, landed a left hook to Rivas’ body, forcing him to take a knee. In the fifth round, Rubalcava landed a short right hand to Rivas’ body, once again sending him to a knee. The final knockdown would come in the same round, as Rubalcava would trap Rivas on the ropes and land another body shot

Rubalcava, 10-1-1 (4 KOs), bounces back from his first career loss in May, which took place in the same building.  Rivas is now on a two-fight losing streak as his record falls to 9-3-1 (4 KOs)
