Rene Tellez Giron has upset another prospect.
Tellez Giron won a 10-round unanimous decision over hometown favorite Jordan White on Friday in the main event of a card at CareFirst Arena in Washington, D.C. The scores were 95-93, 97-92 and 95-94.
Tellez Giron, of Queretaro, Mexico, has spent a career being a road warrior, and Friday night’s performance embodied everything he is as a fighter – reckless, strong and hellbent on winning. Tellez Giron, 26, attacked White’s body at the start of the fight and, in the second round, saw his efforts pay off when a short right hook nearly dropped White.
The following round saw Tellez Giron keep the heat on with a right uppercut followed by a left hook to the body that he would repeat. White, a 28-year-old from Washington, D.C., had blood coming from his nose by the end of the third, and although he was able to land a jab, his feet were not set. Tellez Giron continued to walk forward and land power punches, dictating the terms of the fight, forcing White to use a lot of energy. Tellez Giron landed an overhand right that sent White to the canvas in the fifth round, silencing the crowd.
In the sixth, White tried to be elusive, but with blood flowing from his face as the damage was adding up, he wasn’t able to keep Tellez Giron from pressing forward.
Between the sixth and seventh rounds, White sat on his stool until the bell rang. Tellez Giron continued to land thunderous body shots as he walked down White in the round. In the eighth, White was slow coming out of his corner. Tellez Giron continued to relentlessly attack White, who showed courage and heart in withstanding the attack.
Tellez Giron finally began to slow in the ninth round, and White, in a night of late-round knockouts, rallied and looked to land a big punch in the 10th and final round. Despite White sitting on power shots, Tellez Giron continued to press forward without concern, and at the bell, he raised his arms in victory while White, exhausted, went to his corner.
Tellez Giron upset 2016 U.S. Olympian Karlos Balderas in 2019 and defeated fringe contenders Alex Dilmaghani and George Acosta in 2024. Although he lost to Floyd Schofield in November and Eduardo “Rocky” Hernandez in February, Tellez Giron entered Friday’s contest with a stay-busy win over Eduardo Vera Sanchez in April.
Tellez Giron improved to 22-5 (13 KOs), while White fell to 19-2 (12 KOs), ending his win streak dating back to 2018.
