A fit and focussed Rendall Munroe weighed in at 8st 10lb for his European super-bantamweight title defence against Simone Maludrottu.  The Italian, who came in at 8st 9¼lb, won the European title down at bantamweight, where he also challenged for the WBC strap.  Friday night will see Munroe make the 5th defence of his title; he has told The Sun that this fight will catapult him towards Toshiaki Nishioka’s WBC title.

“Winning the world title is my goal in life and beating Maludrottu will help me achieve it.  There is only one winner,” declared Munroe.  The ‘boxing bin man’ banished his family from the house, took some time off work and put in the long, lonely hours at the gym in order to prepare for this one, a win will bring him to the cusp of a world title.

Simone has broken hearts on these shores before, defeating Damaen Kelly and Ian Napa in European bantamweight title fights.  The 31-year-old has bags of experience and will be desperate to add another British scalp to his record.

Frank Maloney has told the press that he is looking forward to an action packed bill.  “We’ve got a lot of local lads.  Lots of prospects and it will be a good show,” declared Maloney.

Munroe said, “I am totally confident.  I enjoy the game and this is another step up the ladder.  My trainer does all the looking (at videos) and tells me what to do before and in the fight.”

Tony Jeffries, who is looking to get back on the KO trail after going the distance in his last one, Scott Haywood and John Watson also appear on the bill.  However, John Fewkes will not be fighting after pulling out with a knee injury, the Sheffield prospect has been sorely missed and one can only hope that he is back in action soon.
