With Rau'Shee Warren and Jamie McDonnell coming to terms for their ordered title consolidation bout, the Monday workload is now one bout lighter for the World Boxing Association.
Three purse bids were on the docket for Monday morning, but one can be scratched off the list as the aforementioned bantamweights have worked out a deal for a forthcoming clash. Terms were undisclosed but news of their reaching an agreement was confirmed by the WBA press office.
Warren (14-1, 4KOs) became the first member of the 2012 U.S. Olympic boxing team to capture a major title, doing so on his second attempt in outpointing Juan Carlos Payano this past June in Chicago, Illinois. The feat was fueled by revenge for a disputed decision loss suffered by the Cincinnati native last August in Winter Park, Florida.
Both Warren and Payano were aware that waiting in the wings for the victor was an eventual clash with McDonnell (28-2-1, 13KOs), who has been chomping at the bit for more big fights following his pair of wins over previously unbeaten Tomoki Kameda in 2015. Overall, McDonnell has made four successful defenses of the alphabet title he claimed in a TKO win over Tabtimdaeng Na Rachawat in 2014.
WBA brass confirmed that bout agreements are expected to be submitted to its Panama City office in the coming days.
Once inked, the bout will serve as the continued efforts of the Panama-based sanctioning body to reduce its number of title claimants. Warren is regarded as the "Super" champ while McDonnell carries the "Regular" title at bantamweight.
Two more bouts are still due to make its way to separate purse bid hearings at WBA headquaters on Monday:
- Undefeated WBA interim heavyweight titlist Luis Ortiz versus mandatory contender Alexander Ustinov;
- WBA super welterweight titlist Jack Culcay versus unbeaten mandatory challenger Demetrius Andrade
Bidding will take place on Monday, August 15, 2016, at 11:00 a.m. at WBA headquarters in Panama City. The session is open to all WBA-registered promoters.
