The violence continues in Mexico. In 2017, several fighters and/or their family members have been victims of violence in various cities within Mexico.

The latest incident took place in La Paz, Baja California Sur - where Mexican Olympian Raul Castaneda was ambushed by a storm of bullets and later died.

Castenada was being chased down as he was driving his car, when bullets were fired at his car. Witnesses testified that Castaneda was hit by some of the bullets, lost control of his car and crashed into another vehicle.

Paramedics arrived at the scene to transfer him to a nearby hospital , where hours later it was reported that the Mexican medalist had lost his life.

The 'Pay' as he was known, was part of the Mexican delegation that participated in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens and the Pan American Games in Santo Domingo 2007, where he won the bronze medal.

Castaneda, who was 34 years old, made it to the second round of the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens and he was stopped, in  the Light flyweight division, by Russia's eventual bronze medalist Sergey Kazakov. He qualified for the Olympic Games by coming in second place at the 1st AIBA American 2004 Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Tijuana.

Castaneda turned pro in October of 2005 and closed out his career for unknown reasons in July of 2012, with a final record tally of 15-2, 8 KOs.
