NASHVILLE—As someone who habitually takes on tough challenges regardless of the reward ahead—or lack thereof—Abel Ramos can appreciate Bryant Perrella’s willingness to take this particular assignment.

Unfortunately, it’s where the list ends in the way of respect towards his opponent this weekend.

“Honestly, his style is perfect for me,” Ramos (25-3-2, 19KOs) told BoxingScene.com ahead of Saturday’s 10-round welterweight bout, which serves as part of a Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) on Fox tripeleheader from Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee. “He talks like he’s about this and that, but he don’t move a lot and he’s not nearly as slick as he thinks he is. I always do well against guys like him.”

Ramos enters weekend riding a seven-fight win streak since suffering a narrow 10-round loss to fellow divisional contender Jamal James in April 2018. The other two losses on his ledger came at the hands of unbeaten foes who went on to win major titles in Regis Prograis and Ivan Baranchyk. The 28-year old from Casa Grande, Arizona is generally a straightforward fighter, both in and out of the ring.

For this particular occasion, he’s had to endure more trash talk than normal. Perrella (17-2, 14KOs) is so confident of beating Ramos that he hasn’t stopped creating catchphrases for the assignment. From “Adios Ramos” to “Abel isn’t able” to “he ain’t ready for this spaghetti”, the Ft. Myers, Florida native has done his part to steal headlines away from the local attractions on the card, particularly Ashland City’s Caleb Plant (19-0, 11KOs) who defends his super middleweight title versus Germany’s Vincent Feigenbutz (31-2, 28KOs) in the evening’s main event.

Most observers feel the talk—however entertaining—isn’t necessary, as the fight is pegged to steal the show. You can count Ramos among the ‘less is more’ crowd.

“His trash talk game is weak, I gotta rate it real low,” Ramos said as he laughed off recordings of Perrella’s greatest verbal hits. “It’s been as basic as the way he fights.

“But you know what, I don’t have anything to say back to him. He’ll see it for himself in the ring.”
