The Floyd Mayweather and Marcos Maidana fight is now over but already people are asking for a second helping as The Moment ended up being a fun and competitive affair. Mayweather kept his undefeated record intact as he was awarded a majority decision victory but Maidana put up a great fight.
Floyd’s trainer and Uncle Roger Mayweather was asked for his thoughts on the bout. While he feels his nephew clearly won, he also feels Maidana’s performance is worthy of getting a rematch.
“Oh I thought [the 114-114 scorecard] was crazy. The fight wasn’t near that close. Floyd beat him easy. Floyd put hands on him easy but [Maidana] fought a good fight. For what he was, he fought a good fight. The guy didn’t lay down, he took what Floyd had – even though Floyd’s hand was hurting – but the guy took it and he weathered through it so I think the guy deserves another fight with Floyd,” Roger would tell BoxingScene.
Much like Mayweather himself, Roger believes if they do indeed fight a second time things won’t be the same.
“It’s going to be different. It’s going to be way different. But I say the guy deserves a fight because the guy put up a challenge. He wasn’t one of those scary guys. He was taking chances” said Roger.
Mayweather is slated to return September 13th though he has hinted retirement is also an option. He did however mention several times after the fight that he’s willing to give Maidana a rematch if the fans and Maidana want it.
