NEW YORK - Raul Frank stopped champion Terrence Cauthen in the ninth round of their USBA junior middleweight title fight Thursday night, but the result was under protest.
After referee Ricky Gonzalez counted out Cauthen, the champions' promoter, Joe DeGuardia, claimed Frank used a head-butt rather than a hard right to end the fight.
DeGuardia took his claim to Ron Scott Stevens, chairman of the New York State Athletic Commissioner, who said he didn't see the head-butt. DeGuardia produced a video replay.
"Replays are not used in New York," Stevens said, "but in the interest of fairness to all parties I will hold a hearing next Wednesday and try to settle this situation."
The were no other knockdowns in the bout. Frank, a native of Gana, living in New York, weighed in at 153 1/4. He is 28-5-3 with 14 KOs.
Cauthen, from Trenton, N.J., who weighed in at 153 1/4 pounds, is 32-4 with nine knockouts.
