The heavyweight prospect Adrian “The Next” King suffered a stunning setback when losing for the first time in his pro career, to the Czech Republic journeyman Adam Kolarik.
Mark Lyson scored the contest 58-57 for the visitor, who earned his win.
England’s King, only 20 years old, is 5-1 (3 KOs).
Both had success in the opener and Kolarik clearly came to test the young prospect, who has been around British gyms sparring some of the leading heavyweights as part of his tuition under trainer Curtis Woodhouse.
Kolarik was cut by his left eye in the third but he was giving King plenty to think about by stepping in with his jab and in the same session landing a crisp right uppercut.
Kolarik, 31 years old, was offering plenty of resistance. Kolarik – 9-9 (7 KOs) – actually lost his past fight, weighing 198lbs as a cruiserweight, when stopped in four by the 9-3-1 Viktor Trush. King has plenty to work on.
The GBM promotion at Connexin Live in Hull was billed as Deep Waters and it was Kolarik’s job to take King there, which he did.
The lightweight Gemma Richardson, also of England, became the first fighter to stop Tereza Dvorakova, also from the Czech Republic, and who is 4-11 (1 KO). Richardson is 2-0 (1 KOs).
Dvorakova suffered damage to her nose but was well behind when the contest was stopped after 105 seconds of the fifth round. It had been scheduled for six.
Louis West won every round of six against his fellow Englishman Jake Smith at welterweight. The 60-54 decision improved West to 4-1; Smith dropped to 1-31-4.
In another six-round all-English contest, at super middleweight, the journeyman Richie Chapman, “The Camden Caretaker”, lost all six rounds to Roan Stanley, who is 5-0. Chapman is 13-53-9 (2 KOs). Lyson scored it 60-54.
