After a soul searching 2007, Sechew Powell (22-1, 13KOs) is banking on having a better year in 2008. Without a promoter for a months, Powell signed up with Warriors Boxing, won a crucial eliminator and finds himself in position for a title shot at IBF junior middleweight champion Cory Spinks (36-4, 11KOs).
Powell recently spoke with BoxingScene.com's Jose Aguirre about his newfound position in 2008.
"I'm excited. It's 20-years in the making. I've been doing this for 20-years, competitively. (I've been) non-stop, always wanted to be a world champion. I was on hiatus in the earlier part of this year. I was a free agent from DiBella Entertainment in late February. For most of the summer I was a free agent looking for a situation. I got with Seminole Warriors, in three months I got a title shot. Here I am, number one in the world by the IBF, ready for fight for the title," Powell said.
As far as the champion, Powell has nothing negative to shoot at Spinks' direction. He respects him as a fighter and a champion, but wants the title around Spinks' waist.
"I think he's a good champion. A very skilled fighter. A good dude. He's a nice guy that I know personally. He's a good fighter, but for the IBF junior middleweight championship that's a lot on the line. It's nothing personal. I'm coming to win," Powell said. "Just like it's his dream to be a champion or to have been a champion, I share those same passions. I think it's stronger than his because I haven't had that feeling yet and I'm looking for it. I'm ready to take him on if he's the guy that's going to be there."
