The new World Boxing Council champion of the light welterweight division, 31-year-old Ukrainian Viktor Postol (28-0, 12KOs), will have one voluntary defense before meeting his mandatory obligation against Amir Imam.
It is worth noting that many fans would like to see a unification bout between Postol and the world champion of the WBO, 28-year-old Terence Crawford (27-0, 19KOs).
Crawford is one of the few candidates in line for a fight with eight division world champion Manny Pacquiao in early 2016. If Crawford is passed over, Postol is very willing to face him.
"As the owner of the WBC belt, Postol has a mandatory challenger in Amir Imam," said manager Vladimir Kornilov. "But after winning the vacant WBC belt, it gives him the right to have a voluntary defense. Right now there are many options that are being discussed, but I think Postol deserve to have one voluntary defense, because his last couple of fights have been with strong opponents."
"We are not against a fight with Crawford [being next], and I believe that Postol is confident [of winning that fight]. It would be a tough fight for us, but I'm not sure whether or not Crawford wants to fight Victor right now. But if Postol holds another fight on HBO, and we have such an agreement, then we can make a potential fight with Crawford a lot more interesting."
