WBA welterweight champion Marcos Maidana (35-3, 31KOs) can redeem himself by avenging the worst loss of his career, which came at the hands of Devon Alexander in February of 2012.
Maidana pulled off a shocking upset last Saturday night, when he upset Adrien Broner over twelve rounds at the Alamodome in San Antonio.
One week prior to Maidana's triumph, Alexander was upset in another unexpected outcome - as Shawn Porter (23-0-1, 14KOs) outboxed him and won the IBF's version of the welterweight crown. Maidana has the option of facing the man who beat the man.
Porter, and his father/trainer Kenny Porter, were ringside for Maidana's big win - and they advised Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer that a Maidana unification is the fight they want.
"We spoke to Richard Schaefer. I said to Mr. Schaefer 'we want to unify.' He looked at Shawn and said 'you want to unify' and Shawn said absolutely," Kenny Porter said.
"I want that fight, because the inevitable is, once we get that title, there is another guy in the welterweight division [Floyd Mayweather Jr.], who is the king of the welterweight division and also the king of boxing, who will have to take notice."
