The last time Shawn Porter came to Carson, California, to fight, he left StubHub Center without the IBF welterweight title.

Kell Brook barely beat him that night in August 2014, yet that close loss cost Porter some money. The Akron, Ohio, native defeated Adrien Broner two fights later, but he waited another year thereafter before facing Keith Thurman in his next 147-pound championship match.

Thurman topped Porter, too, in what was widely considered one of boxing’s most entertaining encounters of 2016. Following the Thurman loss, Porter re-established himself again and edged Danny Garcia in his last fight to become a two-time welterweight champion.

Porter hopes his return to Carson, where StubHub Center now is known as Dignity Health Sports Park, provides him with a more favorable memory than he has from the Brook bout.

The 31-year-old Porter (29-2-1, 17 KOs) will oppose the 32-year-old Yordenis Ugas (23-3, 11 KOs) in a 12-rounder FOX will televise as the main event of a tripleheader (8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT). They’ll fight for the WBC crown Porter won when he defeated Philadelphia’s Garcia (35-2, 20 KOs) by unanimous decision September 8 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

Las Vegas’ Porter lost to Brook by majority decision.

Two judges, Max DeLuca (117-111) and Adalaide Byrd (116-112), scored their 12-rounder for Sheffield’s Brook, who was undefeated at that time. Another judge, Dave Parris, scored Porter-Brook a draw (114-114).

“It didn’t go the way I wanted it to go,” Porter said on a conference call recently. “So, this is definitely another opportunity for me to not only shine, but [to] have all the feelings that I expected and wanted to have the first time around. So yes, it’s definitely in my mind and definitely something I’m looking forward to.”

Temperatures once Porter and Ugas enter the ring at this outdoor venue figure to remain in the low 50s. It also has been unusually rainy this week in Southern California, but Saturday’s forecast calls for clear skies.

“You know what? I love the venue,” Porter said. “Actually, I’ve maybe been there just maybe once or twice since my fight – I think twice since my fight. And certainly yes, understanding when I went there to fight Kell Brook, I was very, very excited to have that fight there.”
