The Visayan Daily Star is reporting that a possible rematch between WBO super bantamweight champion Daniel Ponce De Leon (32-1, 29KOs) and WBO bantamweight champ Gerry Penalosa (56-6-2, 35KOs) may take place on the undercard to Floyd Mayweather Jr-Ricky Hatton on Dec. 8 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
De Leon scored a one-sided decision over Penalosa in March, but many felt the exciting scrap was much closer than indicated on the official scorecards.
Two weeks ago, De Leon destroyed undefeated filipino prospect Rey "Boom Boom" Bautista by way of first-round knockout, while the co-feature saw Penalosa win his WBO title by knocking out Jhonny Gonzalez with a crippling punch to the liver.
Penalosa told the paper that he wants to get revenge for himself and his fallen countryman Bautista.
"I want to avenge my loss and Boom Boom's," Peñalosa said. "Coach Freddie (Roach) and I have been discussing about my loss and what I should do. I promise to fight from the opening bell until the end. This time, I am challenging him so I will have to match his aggressiveness and throw more punches. Hopefully, I will be coming back here a champion.
Penalosa said he would be open to taking a tuneup bout in the Philippines prior to the proposed rematch with De Leon.
