WBO super flyweight champion Fernando Montiel (35-2, 26 KOs) scored a twelfth round TKO over game Luis Melendez (25-3, 20 KOs) to retain his world title on Thursday night at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. It was back-and-forth action throughout with both fighters down. Menendez staggered Montiel in round three. Montiel dropped Melendez at the end of round six, but was dropped himself while going for the kill in the seventh. Bleeding badly over both eyes, Montiel finally won it by dropping Melendez with a hard body shot in the last round. Referee Kenny Bayless stopped the fight moments later at 1:58. At the time of the stoppage, scores were 107-100, 107-100, 107-101 for Montiel.
