The victory was the fourth for Verdejo since suffering his first career defeat.
Verdejo was working his jab in the first round and was keeping Madera at a distance. In the closing seconds of the opening round, Verdejo crushed him with a combination of punches to score a knockdown.
Madera was very hurt and struggled to get up, and the contest was waved off by the referee.
