Undefeated WBC 154-pound champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez took part in a press gathering in Mexico, along with World Boxing Council President Jose Sulaiman, and the 22-year-old boxer demanded to face Floyd Mayweather Jr. or Miguel Cotto on May 4, 2013.
Because the final elminator between Vanes Martirosyan and Erislandy Lara ended in a technical draw, Sulaiman made it clear that Canelo would be given the opportunity to make a voluntary defense in May. Canelo will take part in the WBC's 50th annual convention, which starts on December 2 in Cancun.
"We proposed to Golden Boy Promotions that we want to fight on May 4th with Floyd Mayweather, Miguel Cotto or Sergio Martinez. [Martinez] was discarded because he announced that he plans to return in Argentina [on April 27]," said Alvarez.
"I want to beat the best. We did things pretty good [this year] and I'm happy. The time is right to fight Mayweather, three years ago we rejected a good [purse] because the time wasn't right."
Things will become clear for Canelo this Saturday, when Cotto faces WBA "regular" champion Austin Trout. If Cotto loses, then Canelo will focus all of his energy on getting Mayweather in the ring for May.
