As previously reported on BoxingScene.com, former four division world champion Adrien Broner has run afoul of the law again, although in this case he may be lucky to be alive. The former champ was arrested Thursday after being stopped in an SUV that was riddled with bullet holes.
According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, police said they found eight bullet holes in a Chevy Suburban rented by Broner. They linked the vehicle to an early-morning incident in his home town of Cincinnati, and the boxer was taken into custody as he crossed into Kentucky.
Ten 9mm shell casings were recovered at the scene of the incident, in which Broner told police that someone shot at his car after following him when he left a bar.
“One shot after another. There wasn’t no hesitation between it. Just like they emptied the whole clip,” a witness said (via WLWT).
Broner was not injured, but he was subsequently arrested on an open warrant for public intoxication and disorderly conduct charges from 2014. The 27-year-old reportedly posted a $503 bond and is scheduled to appear in court later this month.
Broner (33-2, 24 knockouts) has won titles at junior lightweight, lightweight, welterweight and, most recently, super lightweight. However, Broner was stripped of the latter belt by the World Boxing Association for weighing in over the 140-pound limit for an April 2016 fight against Ashley Theophane at the D.C. Armory.
He won that fight, as well as his next and most recent bout, a split decision over Adrian Granados in February. Broner has also beaten the rap following a number of incidents dating back to 2007, when he was charged with aggravated robbery and felonious assault. Since then, his charges have included unlawful firearm possession, witness intimidation, domestic violence, robbery, battery and assault.
Police said (via WCPO) they believe Broner was involved in a fight at the bar Thursday morning, but noted that Broner was not cooperating with their investigation.
