Heavyweight contender Manuel Charr was shot at a diner in the German town of Essen, according to a report in German newspaper Bild. Photo by Klaus Fields.
The details are a bit foggy, but it does not appear that he suffered any life threatening injuries. He spoke with emergency services, was put on a stretcher and taken in an ambulance to a local hospital. He underwent emergency surgery and seems to be out of danger, says the paper.
German outlet Spox reported that Charr suffered as many as four gunshot wounds to the abdomen, but that has not been confirmed.
Charr was at the eating establishment with friends when the incident took place. A friend of the boxer told Bild that Charr had "a problem with a man from Essen" and told the man "look, I'm in your city."
Initially it was believed that Charr was with popular rapper Kay One, who denies even being in the city when the shooting took place.
According to eyewitness reports, the perpetrators came in a car outside the restaurant and fled after the shooting.
The rumor, says the paper, is the incident stems from a beef on Facebook where some insults were traded.
