Lamont Peterson defeated Victor Cayo via 12th round knockout on the latest edition of ESPN's Friday Night Fights. By winning the fight Peterson becomes the mandatory challenger for Amir Khan's IBF junior welterweight belt.
Khan and Peterson's camps had discussions earlier this year for a potential showdown between the two fighters. Peterson's team wasn't happy with the amount of money being offered for the fight and also didn't believe they would be able to get a fair shake on the scorecards with the fight taking place in England. Khan ended up facing Paul McCloskey instead and defeated him via technical decision.
"We didn't feel we could win a decision over there so we did this eliminator here and now we are his (Khan's) mandatory," Peterson told BoxingScene.com
After Khan's knockout victory over Zab Judah last Saturday, Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer announced that Khan's next fight will be in December and will take place in the United States. That was music to Peterson's ears.
"Amir Khan, I am waiting for you! You and me in December. I took care of Cayo. Now you are next," said Peterson.
Schaefer had revealed at Khan's post fight press conference that Erik Morales, the winner of Robert Guerrero and Marcos Maidana and the Peterson-Cayo winner were all candidates to face the WBA/IBF junior welterweight champ.
