Peter Fury, uncle and trainer of former heavyweight world champion Tyson Fury, is under fire after tweeting what many perceived to be homophobic messages in the direction of openly gay boxer Orlando Cruz.
Peter Fury took to Twitter after Cruz was knocked out in the eight round in Cardiff at the hands of undefeated Terry Flanagan, who easily retained his WBO lightweight title.
Cruz had moved up from super featherweight to take the fight.
Peter Fury stated in the aftermath - "That's the difference between real men and half of something else."
After there many followers erupted in anger and criticized his tweet - he replied with: "Don't worry about my position. Fighting men I want to see. Not something else!"
In the past, Tyson Fury also came under fire when he made homophobic in an interview with Daily. Tyson, who is very religious, said the embrace of homosexuality was bringing down the UK.
"There are only three things that need to be accomplished before the devil comes home," Tyson Fury said. "One of them is homosexuality being legal in countries, one of them is abortion and the other is paedophilia."
Puerto Rico's Cruz came out as homosexual in 2012. He said on the eve of his world title fight that he was proud to be a role model and hoped to inspire other gay athletes.
"It's very important, wonderful, that other people are interested in me as a role model," Cruz said. "People have told me I'm an inspiration for coming out of the closet. They want to be the same as me - not scared, only happy. I want that other [gay] athletes are not scared to walk into the society. Don't be scared. Be happy with your life, and happy with your decision. All people are the same."
