Former world champion Pedro Guevara (29-2-1, 17KOs) won a tough twelve round unanimous decision over late replacement Jerry Tomogdan of the Philippines. Tomogdan (21-8-3, 9KOs) won his last two fights, but not skilled enough to beat Guevara at the “Centro de Usos Mutiples” in Mazatlan, Sinaloa. The scores were 120-110, 120-108 and 120-108.
Originally, Guevara was set for a rematch with World Boxing Council light flyweight champion Ganigan "Maravilla" Lopez (28-6, 17KOs), who suffered a severe calf injury and withdrew from the fight.
In the first round, Guevara was nailed with a hard head butt that produced a busted nose and some breathing issues. In the fourth round, Guevara dropped Tomogdan but could not put him away. The tough Filipino took some heavy leather and continued to fight until the final bell.
The rematch between Ganigan Lopez and Pedro Guevara is being eyed for early 2017.
Guevara made the second defense of the 108-pound title in July 2015, winning by points against Lopez. Now Lopez is the champion.
Guevara lost the title by way of a split decision in November 2015 to Yu Kimura of Japan. Lopez than traveled to Japan and unseated Kimura this past March by way of a majority decision, and then retained his title in July against Jonathan Taconing.
Lopez has told reporters that he's very motivated to avenge his loss from 2015. Lopez hopes to have the same kind of war as the recent super flyweight bout between Roman 'Chocolatito' Gonzalez and Carlos Cuadras.
