Pedro Campa picked up his ninth consecutive victory after earning a 5th round stoppage of Jose Alfaro in their welterweight battle Saturday evening in Guaymas, Mexico.
Traffic flowed one way the entire time, as Campa landed at will with his right hand upstairs and left hooks to the body. Alfaro did his best to absorb the incoming, but there are only so many rounds you can get hit without offering return fire before being beaten into submission.
While there weren't any knockdowns on the night, Alfaro was a fighter of the verge of collapse in round four. Campa was dialed in with his power punches, at one point knocking the wind out of the visiting boxer from Nicaragua in continuing to piling up rounds on the scorecards.
The start of round five came and went with Alfaro still on his stool as the referee was informed that he was unable to continue.
The official time was 0:01 of round five.
Campa rolls to 20-1 (15KOs), extending his win streak to nine in a row following an upset defeat at the hands of countryman Ramses Agaton in Dec. '13.
Alfaro falls to 28-10-1-1 NC (24KOs) as he further slips into opponent status. He is now 1-8-0-1NC outside of Nicaragua, though the lone win came in a lightweight title winning effort in Germany way back in 2007.
The reign was short-lived, conceding the belt in his first defense less than five months later. He's also suffered losses to countrymen and former champs Erik Morales, Antonio DeMarco and Humberto Soto.
Also on the show, Anabel Ortiz (20-3, 3KOs) made the sixth successful defense of her second tour as a strawweight champion following a unanimous decision victory over Katia Gutierrez.
Scores were 98-92 and 99-91 (twice) in favor of Ortiz, who was also once a junior flyweight titlist before dropping back down in pursuit of a second title reign. Gutierrez falls to 19-7 (4KOs), having now lost four of his last five starts.
The bout aired live on TV Azteca in Mexico and beIn Español in the United States.
