There certainly isn't any love lost between former light heavyweight champion Jean Pascal and current WBC light heavyweight kingpin Adonis Stevenson. Pascal recently met with the press in Los Angeles and said that he doesn't know why Stevenson's name gets mentioned when the top 175 pound fighters are mentioned.
"First of all Superman, I don't even know why people bring up his name. Everybody knows he is not even a real fighter, not a real champion. To be a world champion you need to be the best to prove you are the best. I have tried to fight him many times and he doesn't want to fight me because he knows. Like I said, he's not smart but he's not dumb either. I beat him twice in the amateurs. I beat this guy twice already so he knows that I am better than him. That is why he isn't trying to fight me and he isn't trying to fight Kovalev. He doesn't want to fight nobody," Pascal said.
The 33-year-old Pascal spoke to BoxingScene.com after the roundtable ended and said that a fight against Stevenson could be the biggest fight in Canadian history but that his Haitian countryman lacks the heart to step in the ring with him, citing their two amateur meetings as the reason why.
"That would be the biggest fight ever but Stevenson is a coward and he would never accept a fight with me because I beat him not once but twice in the amateurs and he do remember that and that is why he doesn't want to fight me. Because, honestly he has everything to gain by fighting me. He is going to make the biggest purse of his career by fighting me and if he beats me he is going to be the boxer in Canada," Pascal stated.
Pascal's 2014 fight against Lucian Bute was dubbed Montreal's biggest fight ever. Pascal said the difference was in that fight both he and Bute were very big in Canada while in his opinion Stevenson isn't well known.
"When I fought Bute I was quite popular. I was a former champion and Bute was very popular as well but I didn't need Bute to be popular. Stevenson needs me to get popular in his own country because right now he is not," Pascal told BoxingScene.com.
