It was a sweet win for Armen Ovsepyan, as the Armenian-born, Russia based fighter claimed the California State Super Welterweight Title by halting Mexico's Jorge Pimentel in the Second round of the Showdown Promotions/UBM Promoted fight card held at the El Faro Plaza Center in Vernon, California.
Ovsepyan, the stronger fighter visibly battered Pimentel to the ground twice in the second round, with the stoppage coming at :59 seconds into the frame. With the win, Ovsepyan bounced back from a split decision loss to former Olympian Ricardo Williams Jr. in his last bout to move his record to 12-2 with 10KOs.
Armenia's super featherweight Vage Suruhan moved his record to 3-0 by outhustling, using his speed and fleet of foot to defeat a high-pressure fighter in a very game Juan Ramon Reyes, who gave Suruhan fits through four action packed rounds.
Suruhan employed his legs, lateral movement to score the flashier shots from the outside, cutting Reyes alongside his right eye in the third round, with the latter returning the favor and bloodying up Suruhan's mouth in the same round.
At the end of four rounds, Suruhan walked away with a 39-37 (twice) and 40-36 unanimous decision.
East L.A.'s Featherweight Aalan Martinez 10-1-1 (6KOs) halted a very wild Ronald Rodriguez in three. The unorthodox, wide punching Rodriguez gave problems to the southpaw Martinez early on in the fight.
Martinez shortened up his shots, behind a jab to put on a volley of shots against a tired Rodriguez in the third round as he layed against the ropes, barely returning a shot back, the referee opted for stopping the fight at 2:43 of the third round.
Super Welterweight Alonso Loeza scored the mild upset by stopping pro-debuting Octavio Franco in the third round. Franco went down twice in the fight, once as he pulled straight back off balance and again as he was hit hard by a body shot and assorted uppercuts which put the fighter down, being counted out by the referee at 1:15 of the third round.
In a very fun bantamweight bout, shorter, wide punching Santiago Alonso came close to pulling the upset of the night by dropping Jesse Villanueva in the first round with haymakers.
Villanueva gathered his senses and put his combinations together in the second round, going on to mount the comeback, dropping Alonso withn the referee stopping the fight as the latter was clearly outmatched and outclassed in the two round war.
In the opening bout of the evening, tall lightweight Roberto Rios won his third fight by winning an inside battle against a tough Cesar Garcia via decision.
