Ireland's Gary “Spike” O’Sullivan (28-2, 20 KOs) has secured the fight that he's been pushing for, a showdown with former IBF middleweight world champion David Lemieux (39-4, 33 KOs) of Montreal, Canada.
The contest will take place on September 15, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The card will be headlined by the middleweight rematch between Canelo Alvarez and WBC, IBO, WBA world champion Gennady Golovkin. HBO Pay-Per-View will carry both contests.
O'Sullivan is riding a six fight win streak, which began after suffering a TKO defeat at the hands of Chris Eubank Jr. in December 2015.
He stopped his last five opponents in seven rounds or less.
Lemieux has lost two of his last seven. He was dominated over twelve rounds last December, by WBO world champion Billy Joe Saunders.
He came back to the ring in May of this year, and won a twelve round unanimous decision over Karim Achour, in a bout where Lemieux struggled with his weight and was unable to make the middleweight limit - as he was two pounds above the weight class.
O'Sullivan has promised to battler Lemieux in order to secure a crack at the winner of the main event.
“This fight is just another step towards fulfilling my ambition of becoming a world champion and providing a good life for my family! David Lemieux is just an object in my way that I fully intend smashing through! Then, I want Canelo or GGG—either one, it doesn't matter! I'm going to war," O'Sullivan said.
Lemieux has no intention of stepping away from the weight and plans to make a statement.
“I’m looking forward to fighting ‘Spike’ O’Sullivan next. I have some unfinished business at 160. We’re going to take one fight at a time. Spike is an action fighter, like me. He’s a tough cookie and comes to fight. This is a fight for the fans. Come September 15, I want to steal the show," Lemieux said.
