As reported earlier, the proposed bout between former welterweight champions Antonio Margarito and Zab Judah, is heading for a possible date of May 3 on Showtime. Also reported ealier, Oscar De La Hoya announced that he was returning to the ring on May 3 to take part in a tune-up for his September rematch with Floyd Mayweather Jr. De La Hoya's return is going to be televised on regular HBO.
The prospect of going head-to-head on Cinco de Mayo weeked with the biggest star in the sport is more than enough to push Margarito-Judah to another date.
A source close to the situation informed BoxingScene.com that Top Rank is not against Showtime moving Margarito-Judah to later date in May, possibly May 10 or May 17.
Numerous sources have told BoxingScene that De La Hoya, currently without an opponent for the May 3 tune-up, is said to be looking at Steve Forbes as a possibility to fill the slot. Feature writer Steve Kim of Maxboxing, also reported the same information with respect to Forbes being the rumored opponent to face De La Hoya.
Forbes, a good mover with a decent defense and quick hands, would provide De La Hoya with the perfect tune-up opponent for a fighter like Mayweather. Acccording to a recent conversation between Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer and writer Dave Meltzer, the search for an opponent has been narrowed down to three names, but Schaefer refused to reveal any of the three names.
