Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya doesn't hide the controvserial issues that hover above his personal life. Since 2007, De La Hoya's addiction problems with drugs and sex have been well documented in the national press. In 2007, photos of De La Hoya surfaced on the internet, displaying the former world champion in women's lingerie and hanging out with a New York-based stripper. Earlier this year, another incident came out, which is now in litigation, where a New York-based escort revealed a drug-fueled night o kinky sex with De La Hoya.
The former fighter realizes his personal troubles are being used as punchlines for jokes and his enemies are using his well known problems as ammunition for verbal abuse. Floyd Mayweather Jr., several months back, trashed De La Hoya numerous times in the press by calling him "a crackhead, a crossdresser and a homosexual." A few months ago, De La Hoya entered rehab in a major effort to straighten out his life that swirled out of control.
"Life threw me to the canvas and I know things will never be the same. But I'm getting up, I'm fighting for my life and for the future of my family. I'm in the toughest fight that I've ever had to face. I can say everything that's happened, it's in the past. It's very embarrassing but I will not hide anything. I will face my problems, only so I can move forward," De La Hoya said to Gustavo Randel.
"Addiction is a very serious problem, but I had to admit my faults before I could seek recovery. I had to tell my family, friends and my fans because I feel that I owe them (the fans) an explanation. Every day I have to fight and keep myself from falling."
