The Puerto Rico versus Mexico rivalry is set for another chapter this weekend when Oscar Collazo, who holds two alphabet belts at strawweight, goes into battle for Puerto Rico when he defends his titles against Edwin Cano Hernandez, who hails from Querétaro, Mexico, on Saturday (March 29).
The 12-round bout, which acts as chief support to the lightweight showdown between William Zepeda and Tevin Farmer, will be broadcast on DAZN.
At an open workout in Puerto Rico on Monday, the 11-0 (8 KOs) Collazo was, somewhat unsurprisingly, saying all the right things. His camp is going “great”, he’s going to give not 100 but “150 per cent” and, of course, he “feels good”.
“I am focusing on my strategy on this fighter [Cano Hernandez] that we were supposed to fight in November,” Collazo added. “I’ve done over 130 rounds of sparring during this camp. It’s a very strategic camp.
Cano Hernandez, 13-2-1 (4 KOs), will start as a significant underdog and his placement at No. 3 in the WBO rankings, considering he’s only had one fight scheduled for 10 rounds when he was knocked out in the third, can likely be explained by picking up a WBO Latino belt in his most recent outing.
Collazo, however, was openly respectful of an opponent he is expected to handily defeat.
"My opponent is a good fighter,’ he said. “He is ranked No. 3 by the WBO. He wants to be a world champion like everyone else. This is my fifth title defense, and a lot of people have tried to dethrone me, so this won't be the exception. Cano is a hell of a fighter, but this is my time."
"It is a great rivalry between Mexico and Puerto Rico. This fight is just another one for the list. With Cano in Mexico with all his fans, they're all out there waiting for me. It is going to be a great show for the Puerto Rico and Mexican fans out there."
