Former multi-division world champion Orlando "Siri" Salido has a tentative return date set for April 29 in his hometown Sonora, against an opponent to be confirmed depending on what his co-promoters Golden Boy Promotions and Zanfer Promotions decide.
Sean Gibbons, who manages Salido, says the date is set and now they are looking for the best opportunity possible in Mexico or the United States. Gibbons would love to have Salido face Takashi Miura on the April date in the United States.
"For now we have the date of April 29 set aside for a fight in Hermosillo, Sonora, against an opponent to be confirmed. So soon Salido will be in training for anything that happens and we're not walking away from the other option that is a possible - a fight with Miura on HBO in the United States, which would be a sensational war," Gibbons said to ESPN Deportes.
Salido was ringside last month in California and watched Francisco Vargas get stopped by Miguel Berchelt, who picked up the WBC super featherweight world title in the process.
Salido was hoping that Vargas would win, in order to set up a rematch of their 2016 'Fight of The Year.' That didn't happen and the WBC has ordered Berchelt to make a mandatory defense against Miura.
The Mexican veteran is waiting to see what happens in the Berchenlt-Miura situation.
"We know that Miura is waiting for Miguel Berchelt, Salido is also waiting for that decision, so we are going to wait to until next week to make a decision and see what is best direction for Orlando," said Gibbons.
A few weeks ago Salido said that 2017 could be his final year in the sport. Salido is 36 years old and has a professional record of 43-13-4 and 30 KOs. He was world featherweight champion for the International Boxing Federation and also for the world boxing organization. Salido has been out of the ring since last June's twelve round draw with Vargas.
