Jonathan Oquendo's team is currently in talks to reschedule his planned clash with WBO super featherweight world champion Jamel Herring.
The fight has been postponed twice, due to Herring testing positive for COVID-19.
They were scheduled to fight this past Tuesday, but the contest was pushed back after Herring came up positive for the second time - although this time around the test result was ultimately proved to be a false-positive.
Both of the planned dates were scheduled to take place at the MGM Grand's Conference Center in Las Vegas.
The promoters, Golden Boy Promotions and Top Rank, have had talks about rescheduling the fight to a later date.
Oquendo is co-promoted by Miguel Cotto Promotions and Golden Boy.
"We are working to see when it could happen. We are in talks, but with faith that there will be another opportunity and we can fight," said Miguel Cotto Promotions vice president, Héctor Soto to Jorge Ayala.
Initially, Herring was scheduled to defend his crown against Oquendo on a card set down for July 2. However, champion's first positive result was revealed late last month, postponing what will be his second defense.
Oquendo (31-6, 19 KO's) is still hopeful to secure that title shot opportunity.
"There should be no problem rescheduling to a date in the near future. We want Jonathan's opportunity and we will do everything we can to make it happen,” said Soto.
Herring, a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, is 21-2, 10 KO's. He conquered the world title by defeating Masayuki Ito in a fight that took place just over two years ago. After that he defended Lamont Roach Jr. last November.
The president of the WBO, Francisco "Paco" Valcárcel, announced that whoever wins will have to make a mandatory defense later on.
"Both have an agreement to do the fight and they want to do it. They are planning to redo it by early September. Whoever wins has to fight the mandatory challenger," Soto said.
