According to the father and trainer of Omar Figueroa Sr., WBC lightweight champion Omar Figueroa (24-0-1, 18KOs) will not see action again until 2015. There was some discussion of potentially appearing on the undercard of Saul Alvarez's return on December 6th, but that fell through when Canelo suffered an ankle injury and pushed back his own return to next year.
Figueroa was last seen in the ring in August, when he scored a knockout win over mandatory challenger Daniel Estrada. During the fight, the unbeaten champion suffered a serious cut.
"The wound that he suffered against Estrada in August was a little deep. We must wait to see what we can offer for next year, the idea is to go and pursue all the big events," Figueroa Sr. told ESPN Deportes.
Regarding the weight, if Figueroa will remain at 135 or move up to 140-pounds, that decision is still pending.
"It's still being analyzed. When he returns to training, we'll see how he feels and then we'll see how his body responds [to determine] if he stays at 135 or goes up to 140 pounds," Figueroa Sr. said.
