Welterweight Marco “Texano” Nazareth is reported in critical condition after suffering a 4th round TKO at the hands of undefeated 19 year old Omar “Business Man” Chavez in a fight card in Jalisco, Mexico.
Nazareth who has a record of 4-3 with 3 knockouts as against Chavez whose record entering the ring was 16-0-1 with 12 knockouts was carried out of the ring on a stretcher after referee Guillermo Ayon called a halt at 2:59 of round four of a scheduled six round bout.
Nazareth who had been dropped in the opening round underwent brain surgery for some three hours and was reported by doctors to be in ‘critical but stable” condition.
The fight against Omar Chavez was a rematch. Nazareth lost by a fourth round decision to Chavez last April 26, 2008. Chavez is the younger brother of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr and the son of Mexican legend Julio Cesar Chavez.
In his last fight Nazareth had lost by a 4th round TKO to Sergio Soto on November 2, 2008.
Omar Chavez was coming off back-to-back stoppages. On May 2 this year Chavez scored a 2nd round knockout over American Tyler Ziolkowski of Missouri and then on June 20 scored a 2nd round TKO over another American, Patrick "Raging Bull" Cape of Minnesota when the referee stopped the fight after a furious Chavez assault in a fight the young Chavez dedicated to his legendary father on Father’s Day.
