Five more bouts are on tap for the light heavyweight division before bringing a close to Day Three of Olympic boxing competition.
Team USA's Marcus Browne suffered a heartbreaking loss in the afternoon (local time) portion of competition, dropping a 13-11 decision to Damien Hooper of Australia after leading early in the bout.
Terrific action was to be found in the evening portion of the light heavyweight division Round of 32 matchups. Capping the opening round of action was Enrico Kolling of Germany, who advances with a 15-6 drubbing of Cameroon's Christian Donfack.
The 22-year old Kolling now moves on to face Abdelhafid Benchabla of Algeria, who enjoyed an opening round bye. Benchalba made it to the quarterfinals of the 2008 Beijing Games, before coming up short to eventual Gold medalist Xiaoping Zhang.
Nicaragua's Oscar Bravo previously lost to every current Olympian he's ever faced. That dramatically changed in a big way, overcoming an early defecit to grind out a 16-11 win over Bosko Draskovic of Montenegro.
Bravo fell behind 5-2 early on, but enjoyed a huge second round to even up the score. A standing eight-count in the final round permanently kept momentum in his favor as he literally beat the fight out of Draskovic.
Awaiting Bravo in the Round of 16 is Oleksandr Gvozdyk of Ukraine, who pounded out an 18-10 win over Mikhail Dauhaliavets of Belarus in an entertaining affair. Gvozdyk struggled out the gate but turned up the heat in round two, scoring a standing eight count and never looking back.
Carlos Gongora of Ecuador survived a disastrous final round to eke out a 9-8 points win over Vatan Huseynli of Azerbaijan. Gongora enjoyed a three-point margin through two rounds of action, but suffered a standing eight count in a third round gone terribly awry. Huseynli closed the gap considerably, but fell just short in the end as Gongora crawled to the finish line.
Next up for the Ecuadorian is a Round of 16 matchup against heavily favored Adilbek Niyazymbetov of Kazakhstan.
Ehsan Rousbahani of Iran outlasted Jeysson Monroy of Colombia, earning a 12-10 win in a fantastic war of attrition. The fight was dead even heading into the final round, with both fighters going to balls to the wall. Rousbahani managed to win just enough exchanges to surge ahead late for a well-earned victory.
Next up for Rousbahani is Turkey's Bahram Muzaffer, who earned a first-round bye in his second Olympic competition. Muzaffer bowed out in the Round of 16 in the 2008 Beijing Games.
